报告摘要:

In this presentation Dr. Oporto will summarize the worldwide situation around “Wood” and in particular “Wood Science and Technology”; its past, present and future importance.

Wood science and technology have evolved into a vital interdisciplinary field, addressing the growing demand for sustainable materials in a world increasingly focused on ecological balance.

Regionally, North America and Europe have established themselves as leaders in research and development, particularly in engineered wood and bioproducts. Countries like Sweden, Finland, and Canada are known for their advancements in forest sustainability and wood-based biomaterials. In contrast, emerging markets in Asia and South America are ramping up efforts in wood processing technologies, particularly in fast-growing plantation species, to meet their expanding infrastructure needs.

Global concerns about climate change have prompted the wood industry to play a significant role in carbon sequestration and green building practices. The future success of this sector will depend on continued research, technological advancements, and international collaboration.

报告人简介

Dr. Gloria S. Oporto is Associate Professor of Wood Science and Technology at West Virginia University, USA. She received her BS degree in chemical engineering from the University of Concepcion in Chile and her PhD in forest resources from the University of Maine, USA (Advisor: Prof. Douglas J. Gardner). She also has a certificate in Engineered Wood Composites from the University of Maine.

Dr. Oporto is also Adjunct Associate Professor of the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at West Virginia University where she has been leading original studies to advance knowledge within her specific academic field. Her main research interests are in the field of biomaterials from lignocellulosic sources, novel composites, nano-biocomposites, and engineered wood-based composites.

Dr. Oporto has served as Chair of the Society of Wood Science and Technology (SWST) Education and accreditation Committee, promoting the accreditation of Wood Science and Technology programs worldwide.

She has been awarded several times for her efforts in wood science and technology education endeavors, and one of her main education goals is to promote the importance of wood and wood products among the youth.
